It’s very nice.

Make a Defender with an Evoque interior and an idiot proof automatic gearbox and the G class is dead, in my humble opinion.

Make the Defender properly and the JL Wrangler is dead.
Even better...make it exceptional, target the Hilux and Land Cruiser and wait for Toyota to actually put some effort in rather than them resting on their substantial and well earned laurels.
Why target some overpriced niche product?

“Why target some overpriced niche product?”
For the same reason Mercedes does: CAFE standards and the fact that margins on luxury cars are wider than in more economical ones. Stick the F type’s 400hp v6 inside one a defender with a proper interior and some more sound insulation and the Beverly hills crowd will rejoyce!

LR want to sell in excess of 300,000 Defenders per annum once the new version launches. Doing what you suggest won’t get them there...

JLR made around
620,000 cars last year
; I doubt they have the production capacity to pull off 300,000 defenders yearly without seriously sacrificing other production projects. Even jeep struggled to make more than 200,000 wranglers a year, albeit the wrangler is a very “American market” vehicle.
It would be awesome though, to see an English competitor to the wrangler, but I cannot imagine it being a working class hero if I’m being honest....

New factory for the Defender...plus it may not be assembled only in the UK.

Well, lets see what happens. I hope my Lennon reference wasn’t ignored.
Shamefully I see the tides going the wrong way :(

The reference was noted. However, I suggest you brush up on the lyrics and consider how appropriate they might or might not be in this situation...

It is worth reading more than once isn’t it.... I guess you could make out the song as being more complex the more you listen to it.... a very sad reflective song.
I thought the “working class hero” part was Lennon being ironic; which is sort of appropriate considering that even if that truck is presented as an alternative for a wrangler or an alternative for a G wagon it will probably still be quite expensive.... whether it’s 50,000 dollars or 150,000 dollars I do not know.

Unless it starts in around US$30,000 then it won’t sell in any numbers...in Australia, it’ll be up against body on frame pickups and their wagon brethren plus 7 seat SUVs. So upwards from high 30s into the 60k mark. If it starts at fifty then...nope.
But the lack of dealer and importer after sales support is what will limit the here. No matter how good it might be...

Lets hope it delivers the goods :) the Wranger needs a competitor and the people that buy G wagons and never off road them certainly don’t deserve the defender!
